Back to Basics Volvo EX90

The Volvo EX90 will not be delivered for the time being, but you can already order it. Those who do that and do not check any options will hopefully get the car you see here somewhere at the end of 2024.

Volvo EX90 Single Motor Core – €83,495

The electric, seven-seater Volvo EX90 was presented in November 2022. In recent weeks, Volvo announced that the four-wheel drive Twin Motor will be joined by a Single Motor with rear-wheel drive, but also that the new flagship will be significantly delayed. Anyone who orders now will drive away in an EX90 at the earliest at the end of next year. A small downer, but we can already see what you get for the basic price.

For €83,495 you will of course get such a Single Motor, so with rear-wheel drive and 279 hp. Volvo would like to prevent a more expensive version from going less far on a full battery, so the Single Motor will have a slightly smaller battery than a Twin Motor. With gross 104 instead of 111 kWh and a slightly lower consumption, the difference in range is also negligible: 580 instead of 585 kilometers. You do sacrifice a lot on acceleration – 8.4 instead of 5.9 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h – and remarkably enough also on trailer weight. The Twin Motor is allowed to tow 2,200 kg, the Single Mtoor ‘only’ 1,200. Another difference: the Twin Motor is available with air suspension at extra cost, the single-engine EX90 is not.

Then on to the trim levels. There are three of them: Core, Plus and Ultra. Today, of course, everything revolves around the Core, which costs € 4,500 less than a Plus. The difference can be seen on the outside, but only for those who really pay attention. Roof rails, lower bumper parts and trim strips on the Core are not finished in high-gloss black, but in matte black. Both cars are on the same 20-inch wheels and something tasteful like privacy glass is optional in all cases. Also on the top version, with which we warmly compliment Volvo. In terms of color, the knakendriver is quickly finished with the Volvo dealer: only ‘Vapour Grey’ is standard. You get a nice chat for nothing, because according to Volvo it is about “A plain metallic effect in neutral gray with a misty undertone,

Floor mats

On to the interior. There is actually something to choose from, namely between ‘Charcoal’ (black) and ‘Cardamom Quilted’ (beige). Totally free! Compared to more expensive versions, we note less attractive decorative panels, less extensive decorative lighting, less attractive floor mats (!) and a lumbar support that is adjustable in two instead of four directions. When it comes to hard equipment, there are even more differences. For example, the Core lags behind the Plus when it comes to audio and the entry-level model does not have a head-up display.

Yet even the simplest EX90 is already very complete, which should not come as a surprise for this money. For example, the seven seats that make this car so special in EV land are standard. The same goes for the fixed panoramic roof, a huge list of safety systems and the Lidar technology that is said to be the reason for the delay. The climate control has four zones as standard and the option to preheat the car using a timer. Seat heating is of course present, front seats and tailgate can be operated electrically and with 325 watts and 10 speakers, your daily podcast will also sound great. Although the Plus and the Ultimate do offer more, a Volvo EX90 Core is far from making do. Just wait a while…
