15 percent growth
Earlier this week we heard that Kia set a global sales record last year, but Volvo also appears to have never sold so many cars.
Volvo’s Dutch sales figures were already known for a while and we also know that in our country for the first time a majority of Volvos sold were fully electric. Now there is more news, because the worldwide sales are known. 2023 was a particularly successful year for the Swedish brand; A total of 708,716 new Volvos have been delivered worldwide. An increase of 15 percent compared to 2022 and the highest number ever.
Seen around the world, the percentage share of fully electric Volvos was a lot smaller than in the Netherlands. 113,419 of the more than 700,000 Volvos had pure electric drive, about 16 percent. However, the number has grown by about 70 percent compared to a year earlier. Plug-ins were even more popular, with 152,561 units, an increase of 10 percent.
Europe is still the most important market for Volvo and that was no different in 2023. On our continent, 294,794 new Volvos were delivered last year, about 42 percent of the total. The Chinese market follows with 170,091 cars and then comes the United States, where 128,701 Volvos found an owner. With 228,646 units sold, the XC60 was the undisputed number 1 last year, followed by the XC40 with 200,670 units. In the Netherlands, the XC40 finished at the top, with 8,329 copies sold. The V60 was number two in our country, with 2,274 units, followed by the Volvo XC60 with 2,238 units. The C40, which was only available electrically, came in at 1,997 units.
