This week the Android 13 update came out for Pixel 4, 5 and 6. Great news, but a problem has arisen on Pixel 6 that you should do quickly. It can happen that when you reboot your phone bricks (freezes). To prevent this, you have to remove Android 12 completely. Only that’s easier said than done. At first it wasn’t even possible. Now Google itself explains how to go about it.
Android 13
Pixel phones work with a system that you can see as a kind of heart. The operating system is the heart of your smartphone in this, but there are two rooms: Android 13 is stored and used in the left room, but you still have Android 12 in the right room as a backup. The phone basically never uses this unless something goes completely wrong. Then you can go back to the old situation. Very safe: if something is wrong with your current operating system, you still have something up your sleeve.
However, due to a security problem on Pixel 6, 6 Pro and 6a, you can’t use that right room, because an older variant remains. As a result, if you have to reboot Android and want to use that right room, the device won’t turn on because of that weak. If you have put your device on Android 13 in one go and you want to get rid of that Android 12 build, you will have to flash the inactive room with Android 12 to Android 13.
Flashing Pixel 6
Flashing is overwriting such a ‘heart chamber’ with something else that you have downloaded somewhere. In this case it is wise to get an OTA to install. you find it OTA and further explanation here. In addition, Google is releasing an update to the Android Flash Tool, which should make it easier to improve your Android 13 experience. Google does let us know that people who have sideloaded an Android 13 OTA and do not intend to flash it, better not take any action. Good to know: the difference between sideloading and flashing is that a flash is more like a ‘factory setting’ where you also remove a lot, while sideloading means installing something on top of something.
