Want to let your iPhone dry in rice? Better not do that!

Did your iPhone fall into the water? One of the most common pieces of advice is to place your iPhone in rice. But according to Apple, that’s not a good idea.

Drying iPhone in rice? Better not!

Did your iPhone accidentally fall into the bath? Chances are your first impulse is to place your iPhone in a container of rice, hoping the moisture will be drawn out. But Apple now indicates that this could potentially cause even more damage.

Apple says on the support page: ‘Don’t put the iPhone in a bag of rice. Small pieces of rice can damage the iPhone if you do.” Apple also mentions two more things you should not do: ‘Do not dry your iPhone with an external heat source or compressed air’ and ‘Do not place foreign objects in the connector, such as cotton swabs or paper towels.’

When you connect a Lightning cable, USB-C cable, or accessory to your iPhone XS, iPhone Charging is then not possible until the connector and cable ends are dry.

Instead of putting your iPhone in rice, Apple recommends the following measures:

  • Gently tap your iPhone against your hand with the connector facing down to remove excess liquid. Then leave your iPhone in a dry area with some air flow;
  • Allow your iPhone to dry for at least thirty minutes before attempting to charge it or connect it to an accessory;
  • If you see the warning again, there is still fluid in the connector. Then leave the iPhone in a dry area with some air flow for up to a day. It can take up to 24 hours for your iPhone to dry completely;
  • If your iPhone is completely dry but still not charging, disconnect the cable from the adapter, unplug the adapter, and then reconnect it.

According to Apple, these measures give you the greatest chance that your iPhone will work normally again afterwards.
