'Warning: batteries of old Samsung phones can swell'

The batteries of old Samsung smartphones can expand and swell over time. The well-known tech YouTuber notices that Mrwhosetheboss on. He discovered that a number of smartphones from his collection had completely switched off the battery. This was so bad that it broke the back of the Samsung phones. What’s going on and should you be concerned?

Batteries swell

Mrwhosetheboss came out yesterday with a remarkable video in which he reports that a problem has arisen with several smartphones from his collection. Some batteries were turned off. This happened with the Samsung Galaxy S6, the Galaxy S8, the Galaxy Note 8, the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S10, the Z Fold 2 and the only two-year-old Galaxy S20 FE.

Mrwhosetheboss hereby reports that these smartphones were turned off and were only used a few times in total. In addition, he emphasizes that the explanation of the batteries only originated with smartphones from Samsung. With the caveat that he owns hundreds of phones from different brands, all of which he keeps in the same cabinet. It’s not surprising that an older smartphone’s lithium-ion battery can swell – it’s sporadically possible – but it’s remarkable that it happens so often in this case and only with Samsung phones.

Problem with multiple tech journalists and the problem

The Youtuber also appears not to be the only one who notices the problem. He reported on several tech journalists and Youtubers, including Marques Brownlee and Matt Ansinic. They made similar findings. With the latter, for example, the battery problem played a role in ‘each three-year-old Samsung smartphone in storage”. He also reports that the problem only occurred with Samsung phones.

To find out the cause, Mrwhosetheboss contacted JerryRigEverything. That is a YouTuber who is known for his knowledge of parts and the durability of phones. He has discovered the same problems with the batteries of Samsung devices. According to JerryRigEverything, there may be something wrong with Samsung’s quality control. He continues with the following possible cause: “The liquid that ions move in Samsung batteries decomposes and is released as a gaseous substance.”

It is not clear why the gas formation takes place, but it has to do with the fact that the devices have not been charged for a longer period of time. It is also not recommended to charge such an old phone with a swollen battery, because that can cause permanent damage. It is better to have the battery replaced if you still want to use the phone.

Should I be concerned?

It is advisable to check your old Samsung smartphone, if you still have it somewhere. You don’t have to worry as long as you don’t reuse these phones with a swollen battery in their current state.

Also keep in mind that it does not occur with all old Samsung devices. something Mrwhosetheboos also emphasizes in his video. He does, however, expose the remarkable problem. Another tip is to occasionally charge your old smartphones when they are not in use. This instead of draining it completely and then storing it. You can watch the video in question below.
