Traffic congestion annoyances have hardly been there since the corona outbreak and I notice that this has given me a new traffic annoyance. Motorists who accelerate while you are overtaking them. It is often the people who mindlessly only use the middle lane. I had it this morning. I drove a little faster than allowed on the leftmost lane and overtook numerous cars in the middle. There wasn’t a hole big enough to dive in without having to brake. Space that I was looking for because I had a Skoda Octavia RS behind me, which clearly wanted harder than I did.
Fine, I know how Octavia RS drivers are. They want to pop with their smooth middle class. There seemed to be the gap, just passing that Volvo S60 Drive, increasing the set speed on my cruise control by 2 km/h to not let the RS driver’s annoyance with me last too long… but what does he do? Volvo driver? He accelerates while I’m sitting next to him and, moreover, continues to drive in the middle lane, while the right one is clearly empty. The RS driver is clearly getting too much and I can imagine that and he signals to me that I have to go fast. A bit bland, although I can also imagine that he is tired of me. I point clearly to the right for him to make it clear: ‘Hey, can’t you see that Volvo driver I’m overtaking is accelerating’ but I decide to step on the accelerator pedal to get that car as quickly as possible. Pass Volvo driver and steer past him into the far right lane. I quickly lower my pace to the speed I was driving before the incident. The gray Skoda shoots past. The Volvo S60 driver passes me too, staying in the middle lane, looking ahead, probably without realizing the annoyance he caused both me and the Skoda driver. He continues to follow the center lane, unaware of any harm. Now that we have been able to drive better for almost two years, other annoyances are developing again. This blog describes my biggest.
What do you do when someone who is overtaking you suddenly accelerates and there is a car behind you, which means that you have no way to go and you still want to clear that left lane as quickly as possible?
