YouTube is currently testing a cheaper subscription called Premium Lite. What is the difference with the original Youtube Premium subscription? And is it worth subscribing to YouTube’s service?
Several years ago, YouTube launched a subscription structure. After a free trial of two months, you can get a Premium account for 11.95 per month. For families and students there are special subscriptions for 17.99 and 6.99 per month respectively.

What do you get for this? Probably the biggest advantage of Premium is that you will no longer see ads with videos on YouTube, regardless of whether you are using the YouTube app on your phone or watching videos in the browser. YouTube says to divide your subscription money among your favorite channels, so you directly support creators who normally rely on advertisements.
In addition, Premium gives you full access to Originals, a collection of exclusive series produced by YouTube. Recently, however, it was decided to also make the Originals available to free users, including advertisements, of course. According to YouTube, these are “some Originals”, but in practice you can watch almost all original series without a subscription. One of the most famous Originals, Cobra Kai, can now even be seen on Netflix.

By making Originals available to everyone, there is an important reason to choose Premium. However, there are some additional benefits for subscribers with regard to the Originals: you get instant access to all available episodes from the moment a series premieres, you can download episodes and watch offline and you have exclusive access to bonus content, including additional scenes.
Premium also gives you access to YouTube Music. You can also use this service without paying, but then you will get ads again, just like with Spotify. Paying users can also download songs and listen offline, in addition to playing music in the background while continuing to use other apps. In addition, you can listen to music via Google Home or a Chromecast.
YouTube Music is also available as a separate subscription for 9.99, so with Premium you actually get two services for a lower price.
Premium Lite
It was recently announced that YouTube is testing a cheaper subscription of 6.99 euros per month, called Premium Lite. You can then only watch videos without ads. All other extras of a Premium subscription, including the use of YouTube Music, are not included in Lite. Incidentally, it is still unclear whether and when YouTube will make the cheaper subscription available to everyone after the test.

Do you want to watch videos undisturbed, without annoying ads? Then the cheaper subscription can be quite interesting in the long run. If you often listen to music via YouTube, you will also receive YouTube Music with the regular Premium subscription. You no longer have to do it for the Originals: they can be viewed by almost everyone. If you do not find advertisements disturbing, then the choice for Premium is actually not interesting.
