The colors have the following meaning:
- green: Afar Somalis
- blue: Issa Somalis
- white: peace
The star represents unity, the five points the neighborhood regions where Djiboutis live.
The three colors were already used by the LPAI (Ligue Populaire Africaine pour l’Independence) before 1977, just like a white flag with a red, five-pointed ste.
