What exactly happens to the hormonal balance in a false pregnancy? Is HCG also produced and if so, why?

Asker: Karen, 29 years old

Answer

A false pregnancy (pseudocyesis) has several symptoms like those of a real pregnancy such as abdominal distention, lack of menstruation, breast changes, gastrointestinal complaints and frequent urination and some women even feel child movements, but without an effective pregnancy .

The hormonal changes can vary and are not comparable between patients with a false pregnancy. No HCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) is produced, so a pregnancy test is negative.

The exact cause of a false pregnancy is unknown, but it is believed to be related to psychological stress. It has nothing to do with psychosis.

Kind regards,

What exactly happens to the hormonal balance in a false pregnancy? Is HCG also produced and if so, why?
