What is Tietze’s syndrome can one be cured of?

Asker: francine, age 62

Answer

Tietze’s syndrome is an inflammation of the costal cartilage, where it attaches to the sternum.

This is accompanied by local pain and swelling, usually in attacks that can be quite severe. Sometimes this pain radiates.

A cause is unknown, so there is no causal treatment. Treatment consists of painkillers and reassurance.

The condition (usually) occurs in young people and the seizures are thought to disappear with age.

In young persons there is no reason to think of an acquired heart disease such as coronary artery disease so that the patient should not be concerned about this. In elderly patients, a good history is required (possibly supplemented with examinations) to exclude other conditions such as heart disease.
