macOS 11 is nicknamed Big Sur, but what will its successor be called? Research shows that Apple has two options. The name of macOS 12 will probably be Monterey or Mammoth.
This will be the name of macOS 12
Every new version of macOS, the software of Apple computers, has a nickname. These always refer to a beautiful place in California, the home of the company.
In recent years we have had Yosemite, El Capitan, Sierra, Catalina and Mojave. The most recent version was released in 2020 (macOS 11) and is nicknamed Big Sur.
macOS 12 has not yet been presented. Apple will officially announce the new Mac version this Monday at WWDC, its annual developer meeting. So the question is, what’s it going to be called?
“macOS 12 is called Mammoth of Monterey”
According to website 9to5Mac there are two options: Mammoth or Monterey. Both names were recently renewed and registered as trademarks by Apple. Mammoth was extended on April 29 and refers to the Mammoth Mountains, a ski area.
On December 29, Apple registered the name Monterey, a place in California. A striking detail is that Big Sur (the name of the current macOS version) is an area in Monterey. Apple more often links geographic places with each other, for example by first releasing Sierra (in 2016) and later High Sierra (in 2017).
So the name of macOS 12 will probably be Monterey or Mammoth. It is not yet clear which of the two it will be. When macOS 12 is a modest update, Monterey seems appropriate to us. This name makes more sense, as macOS 11 Big Sur was the biggest Mac update in years.
But, don’t rule out Apple. The company may announce a very big update next Monday. In that case, Mammoth is the better option.
