2019 was a good year as a start for Disney +, with 10 million subscribers after one day. In addition, The Mandalorian, which appears every week, attracted and retained a large number of subscribers. We won’t immediately see much of Baby Yoda in 2020, but what about other programs and films?
In 2020, Disney seems to be taking things a bit easier with Star Wars and is betting more on Marvel. A series that would actually come in 2021 is even brought forward: WandaVision is coming to Disney + this year, along with another Marvel series, namely Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In WandaVision we follow Vision (Paul Bettany) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen), while in Falcon and the Winter Soldier we see more of some important characters from the Captain America films: Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan ).
Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness
In addition, there will also be a Marvel film exclusively for the Mouse House streaming service: Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. In addition, there is a whole lot of completely new content: Short Circuit: Experimental Films, Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made, Star Girl, Secret Society or Second Born Royals and Rogue Trip. For nature lovers there are the Disney Nature documentaries and films Penguins, Dolphin Reef and Elephant. Becoming also comes to Disney + this year, the focus series that zooms in on the success of famous athletes such as LeBron James, but also musicians and other entertainers such as Nick Cannon and Candace Parker.
However, there is also content for the little ones, including Monsters at Work. That is a spin-off from the funny animation film Monsters & Co. We also see Lizzie McGuire again, who is now making the leap to streaming after her live action series on television. Toy Story’s Lamp Life is coming this month and tells how Bo Peep fared between the second and fourth film of Toy Story.
Not that it only has to be new content, because the big reason that Disney + is successful is not just because of new content. There are hundreds of existing television series and films from all kinds of brands: Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic, Pixar, Disney Channel and Disney classics.
Not entirely Star Wars-less
It is not that there will be no Star Wars content anymore, because Star Wars: The Clone Wars will be provided with a seventh season this year. Moreover, the second season of The Mandalorian is expected this year, although it will not be in the first half. It is not Star Wars, but they are special creatures: The Muppets get Muppets Now this year, a series consisting of all shorts.
High School Musical: The Musical: The Series: season 2, that’s the real name, is also coming to Disney +. The first season was well received and Disney thought it was a good idea to stick a second season to that series as well. Children can also enjoy the Phineas & Ferb movie, called Candace Against the Universe.
Diary of a Future President will start next Friday, about a Cuban-American girl who does everything to become the president of America later. In that series you see Gina Rodrigues (Jane the Virgin) and Selenis Leyva (Orange is the New Black) among others.
In fact, after the flying start and The Mandalorian, Disney + created a monster, because it is becoming difficult to keep the streaming service that interesting all the time. It has therefore already decided not to put an entire season of a series online in one go, but to go for a week-after-week rollout. On the other hand, Disney + is relatively cheap: it costs 6.99 euros per month and you can already watch 4K content for this.
