WhatsApp has added a new calling feature that makes calling via the app much easier. This has changed!
WhatsApp adds calling function
Another update for WhatsApp is available! In the new version of the app it is much easier to make calls. This mainly concerns telephone calls to unknown numbers, for which WhatsApp has introduced a handy calling function. A new menu has been added to the application, allowing you to easily enter unknown numbers. This menu is much the same as the keys in Apple’s Phone app.
In the earlier version of WhatsApp it was not yet possible to call an unknown number in this way. To do this, you first had to add the number to your contacts, then you could select the saved number in WhatsApp. That is no longer necessary, because WhatsApp has already added the new calling function in the most recent update. So you no longer need Apple’s Phone app.

Do you regularly call via WhatsApp? Then the new calling function is a welcome addition, especially if you do not want to add unknown numbers to your contact list. WhatsApp has added the feature to the latest version of the app, which is version 24.25.5. Have you installed this software version? Then you will find the new calling function as follows:
- Open ‘WhatsApp’ on your iPhone;
- Tap ‘Calls’ in the bottom menu bar;
- Choose the plus sign (+) at the top right;
- Select ‘Call a number’;
- Enter the number you want to call;
- Finally, tap the green button on the phone to start the call.
With the new calling feature you can not only call unknown numbers, but also see whether the number has been added to WhatsApp. Is that the case? Then you can also start a chat with the number. Very handy, especially if you don’t have the opportunity to make a phone call. If the number has not been added to WhatsApp, you will have the option to send a text message, but this may incur additional costs. That depends on your mobile subscription.
Free calling via WhatsApp
WhatsApp makes it much easier to make free telephone calls with the new calling function. That’s the big difference with Apple’s Phone app, where your mobile subscription is used for phone calls. WhatsApp is now a good option, especially if you do not have a bundle with unlimited calling. The application allows you to make free calls, provided the device is connected to WiFi. Do you use mobile data? Please make sure that you do not exceed the data limit.
WhatsApp has also announced more changes to the calling function. The quality of telephone calls is becoming much better, especially video calls. These receive support for a higher resolution, making the image much sharper. According to WhatsApp, some of the improvements will be available before the holidays, starting with the numeric keys for calling. This calling function is already being rolled out to all users, making calling much easier in WhatsApp.
