WhatsApp will update the app and add an AI-Chatbot. With that, Meta now seems to finally meet the privacy requirements of Europe.
WhatsApp gets AI-Chatbot in Europe (with these functions)
However, adding the AI-Chatbot in WhatsApp was not without a struggle in Europe. In the United States, the AI of Meta (the parent company of WhatsApp, among others) was already available in 2023. When Meta thought it was time to bring out the AI-Bot for WhatsApp in Europe to sound privacy supervisors.
Meta was originally planning to train the AI models with the data of the (European) users. The Data Protection Commission then put a stop to it and the release of the AI for WhatsApp was paused.
The problems that the Data Protection Commission had with Meta seem to be solved now and the AI of Meta will soon also come to WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger in Europe. Meta emphasizes that the AI in WhatsApp can only read the messages that you share with the chatbot. Personal messages remain encrypted, as always.
Not all AI functions come to WhatsApp in Europe
Yet the AI-Chatbot from WhatsApp here in Europe does not get all the functions. In Europe, the AI of Meta is currently only available as a chatbot. In America you can do much more with it, such as generating images. In addition, it is also not possible in Europe to ask the AI-Chatbot something about the content of a photo. It is not yet known whether and when these functions will also become available here.
WhatsApp with AI is now being rolled out in Europe
The AI-Chatbot will be rolled out in the coming weeks to WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram and Messenger. So it can take a while before you can use the function yourself. The function becomes available in 41 European countries.
