WhatsApp has new text formatting options

Have you installed the latest update of WhatsApp on your iPhone? Then from now on you can access your messages bullet lists and numbered lists to use. It is also possible to block quotes and inline code to highlight and clarify text. This especially helps to make long pieces of text more digestible.

This is how you use the new text formatting options in WhatsApp

You use the new options for text formatting in WhatsApp by first typing a symbol, followed by your text. We’ll show you how it works.

Bullet list

The bullet list is one of the new text formatting options in WhatsApp. It is actually adding bullet points to your text, like you do with a shopping list, for example. To use the option, type a dash (-) followed by a space and then your text.

Numbered list

This is basically the same as a bullet list, but with numbers. This is useful, for example, if you want to give someone instructions. To create a numbered list, type a number (or two) followed by a period and a space. So in general you start with ‘1. ‘.

Block quotes

You can highlight blocks of text to make them stand out in longer messages. To use this formatting, type the ‘>’ symbol followed by a space in front of the text you want to highlight.

Inline code

Useful if you want to send code, but also a good way to highlight specific information in your text. use the ”’ symbol at the beginning and end of the text you want to highlight.

WhatsApp text formatting that you already had

Before the last update you could already use bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace text formatting. That is of course still possible. For bold you put your text between two ‘*’ characters, for italic between two ‘_’ characters, for strikethrough between two ‘~’ characters and for monospace between 3 ‘`’ characters (i.e. “`).
