Answer
Such severe corporal punishment already disappeared from our regions in the Austrian era, roughly in the period 1770-1775. The French Code des Délits et des Peines of 1795 forbade such highly public, exemplary corporal punishment, but actually confirmed a practice that had been established for twenty years. Incidentally, torture as a method of investigation (not a method of punishment) had also disappeared from the judiciary in the same period and in the same way.
