Why do we prefer to eat fries from the deep-fat fryer than fresh vegetables, while it would be better for our body to eat healthy?
Answer
Why shouldn’t healthy things be tasty? There are people who would rather eat vegetables than chips from the deep-fat fryer.
The problem is that our bodies have developed a mechanism to absorb and retain as much energy as possible. The easiest way to absorb that energy is through foods with sugars and fats (if you want to make a “tasty” snack, you have to make sure that it contains fat and sugar). Protein-rich food also contains energy, but your body has to put in more effort for that. In times of scarcity (eg war) like in the past, it is indeed helpful for your body to absorb fat and sugar, but in times of abundance like now, your body’s “need” will backfire. Your body does not need those fries at all, but you have to convince your brain of this. Of course that takes effort and the only question is whether you want to make that effort for your own body. If you put in the effort and keep it up for a long time, your body will find that vegetables can also sustain it and your brain will slowly be reprogrammed. However, falling back into that “ancient” craving for fat and sugar is very easy and tempting and that applies to everyone.
Kind regards,
