Why do we have those white spots on our nails?

Where do these white spots come from and do certain people have it more than others (eg nail biters)?

Answer

Dear Sander,

White spots on the nail plate can be caused by a number of things:

First there is the ‘lunula’, the white moon on the edge of the skin and nail. This is a normal phenomenon.
There is a possibility that it is a fungal infection or some calcification of your nail plate, but this is especially visible at the toenails.
Another possibility is that this is due to ‘onycholysis’ (the loosening of your nail from the nail bed). This is often traumatically caused. Nail biting (is traumatic to the nail) can indeed cause the nail to be ripped from your nail bed by biting it.

With this explanation you can find out for yourself what the possible cause is. 😉
Hope this has been of service to you.

Kind regards,

Joris
