Why shuffling music in Spotify just got easier

Music shuffling is currently a disaster in Spotify, but that’s going to change in the coming weeks. There will be a special shuffle button for anyone who wants to listen to songs in a random order. This will make shuffling music in Spotify easier.

At the end of last year, Spotify made a radical change to the streaming service: the shuffle button on albums was removed after a request from singer Adele. “It’s not without reason that we make our albums with so much care and we don’t think about the song order for nothing. Our art tells a story and those stories should be heard as they are meant to be heard,” Adele said on Twitter at the time.

Two buttons

However, Spotify is now coming back to the decision and wants to offer a middle ground for those who still want to listen to music in a random order. In the coming weeks, for example, paid members will have a separate shuffle button in the iOS and Android versions of the app next to the play button. Nothing changes for the desktop version of Spotify: on a PC you could always keep shuffling.

Spotify hopes with this choice to create some clarity for listeners. Because although the shuffle option disappeared from Spotify’s mobile apps last year, it was always possible to play music in a random order with a detour. Although it is no longer an option with the album, after clicking a random song, the option does appear again.

Soon there will be a shuffle option next to the current play button.

Other major streaming services, including Apple Music and Amazon Music, already have two separate play and shuffle buttons, and Spotify could no longer be left behind, especially after the criticism of the current obscure play button in the mobile apps.

Not for free members

The separate shuffle button will not be available to free Spotify users, because with a free subscription it is not possible to listen to songs in chronological order at all. So if you want to determine the order of numbers yourself, you have to take out a subscription.

Other changes

Spotify has been looking at ways to keep innovating for a while, including by launching new features. Spotify Curators is the latest achievement, where listeners are in control themselves. Several listeners now have the opportunity to create their own playlists that are then pushed by Spotify.
