There will be no successor to the iPhone 13 mini this year; it gives way to a much larger 6.7-inch iPhone. It was long thought that Apple calls this device the iPhone 14 Max, but the tech giant may choose a different name.
Name iPhone 14 models
Thanks to reliable Apple insiders, it has been known for months that four new iPhone models will appear again this year. They do not have the same screen sizes as the iPhone 13 series, because the 5.4-inch ‘mini’ model is no longer available.
First of all, Apple releases two cheap iPhone 14 models. With the standard model, the screen diagonal again measures 6.1 inches, and you can also choose from a large variant with a display of 6.7 inches. Two more luxurious Pro models complete the iPhone 14 series. The screen sizes are the same: 6.1 and 6.7 inches.
With three of the four new iPhone models, the naming is easy to guess: the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The name of the large version of the iPhone 14 is more of a guess, although ‘iPhone 14 Max’ seems logical. Since the iPhone XS from 2018, Apple has labeled a larger version of an iPhone ‘Max’.
iPhone 14 Plus
According to Apple leaker Lanzk, however, Apple opts for a different, striking naming. The larger of the two entry-level models would be called the iPhone 14 Plus. The last time Apple used “Plus” to designate a larger iPhone model was with the iPhone 8 Plus five years ago.
So this is what the iPhone 14 lineup could look like:
- iPhone 14 (6.1″)
- iPhone 14 Plus (6.7 inches)
- iPhone 14 Pro (6.1″)
- iPhone 14 Pro Max (6.7 inches)
The return of the ‘Plus’ label would not be a strange move. The names iPhone 14 Max and iPhone 14 Pro Max are very similar, which can cause confusion. With a ‘Plus’ Apple provides more distinction between the most expensive and cheapest model in the naming.
Or another Max?
So the rumor sounds plausible, but we have our doubts. Apple leaker Lanzuk has not always proved reliable in the past. He previously claimed that the iPhone SE 2022 will receive MagSafe support, a rumor that later turned out to be false.
Moreover, ShrimpApplePro – an Apple leaker with a better track record – speaks its rumor against†“There will be no Plus,” is the Twitter channel succinctly. In an earlier tweet, ShrimpApplePro predicted that Apple would “just” call the entry-level 6.7-inch iPhone the iPhone 14 Max.
