A remarkable iPhone 15 rumor is doing the rounds. The new flagship of 2023 – the iPhone 15 Ultra – would have an amazing selfie camera. It has not one, but two camera lenses.
Selfie camera iPhone 15 Ultra
The rumor comes from Twitterer Majin Bu, who relies on an anonymous source. The Twitter account doesn’t have a significant track record when it comes to Apple rumors, so take the statements with a pinch of salt.
Last week, reliable Apple analyst Mark Gurman made the first mention of an iPhone 15 Ultra, which succeeds the iPhone 14 Pro Max. With the new name, there’s a good chance that the iPhone 15 Ultra is more than simply a larger version of the Pro model, such as the Pro Max. But what extra features does Apple add?
The source of Majin Bu says he already knows one of the additions: the iPhone 15 Ultra has two cameras on the front. The smaller iPhone 15 Pro does not get this upgrade: the selfie camera still has to make do with one lens. Furthermore, the source reports that both devices have USB-C, instead of Lightning. That is in line with previous rumours.
What does the extra lens do?
It is unclear what exactly Apple wants with the extra selfie lens. Apple may add an ultra-wide angle lens for a wider field of view. This lends itself well to FaceTime calls, for example, as we’ve already seen with the latest iPad models. And you no longer have to stretch your arm to take a group selfie. The second camera can also be used to enhance the depth of field effect, resulting in more beautiful portrait photos.
It would be nice if Apple gave the front camera more love. In recent years, the company – like other phone manufacturers – has mainly focused on the camera module on the back. The iPhone Pro models have three lenses on the back, while the selfie camera stuck to a single camera.
Last Monday we also heard what the iPhone 15 doesn’t get: Touch ID. It has long been rumored that Apple has plans for an iPhone with both Face ID and a fingerprint scanner, but that does not seem to be in place before 2023. It is also clear that the cheaper iPhone 15 models also have the acclaimed Dynamic Island. Now that is only reserved for the more expensive Pro models.
