It was suggested for a while that Microsoft would release the new Windows 12 operating system this year. It has been clear for some time now (but never say never) that a (major) update of Windows 11 will be released in 2024. Microsoft indicates that Windows 11 version 24H2 will be this year’s annual feature update. c’t reports that we can expect this based on the Windows Insider beta program.

New in Explorer and Archive Management
Every Windows update involves tinkering with Explorer and version 24H2 is no exception. This time, the mini buttons for commonly used functions such as cut, copy, and paste in the File Explorer context menu are clearly labeled, making them easier to recognize.
Windows 11 version 23H2 introduced the ability to extract zip files in various formats, including 7z, RAR and TAR. In 24H2, this functionality is expanded with the ability to create 7z and TAR archives. With just a right click on files and folders and selecting Compress to... this new option becomes immediately accessible,

App changes and improvements
A clean reinstall of 24H2 will install fewer default apps, and some apps will no longer be included by default. This applies to Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Maps, Cortana and Movies & TV. These apps have largely become redundant: the new Outlook app replaces Mail, Contacts and Calendar, while Cortana has lost its relevance with the rise of Microsoft Copilot. You can read more about this in PC-Active 336, which will be published around May 10.
Furthermore, Films & TV will be replaced by the Media Playback app, a modern version of the Windows Media Player. Only the Maps app does not seem to be replaced.

Use Microsoft Teams personal and business accounts in parallel

In addition, with version 24H2 in Microsoft Teams you will soon be able to use both personal and business accounts in parallel with the pre-installed Teams app. Microsoft will probably change the names: the two icons in the notification area of the taskbar will probably be called ‘Teams (work or school)’ and ‘Teams (personal)’.

Power button and energy saving mode
In Windows 11 24H2, the Settings menu now offers options to specify what to do when you click the power button, which was previously only possible through the classic Control Panel. Although using the control panel is no longer necessary, the options are still available there.
Microsoft has also simplified access to power saving mode. This mode ensures lower energy consumption during use (not in standby mode) and can be activated directly with a slider.

On off button 1
