With Apple ProRAW you use the full 48 MP iPhone camera

With Apple ProRAW, Apple wants to combine the convenience of the iPhone camera with the versatility and quality of professional photography. Anyone who has an iPhone 14 Pro (Max), iPhone 15 (Pro) or newer can use the full 48 MP camera with this function.

ProRAW lets you take photos in RAW format, but includes Apple’s smart photo techniques such as noise reduction and multiple exposure. This takes a lot of work off your hands because the most essential operations are performed automatically. The camera software combines Apple’s artificial intelligence, advanced photo techniques and RAW structure in one.

24 megapixel photos

The standard wide-angle camera of the iPhone 15 (Pro) consists of a 48 megapixel camera with Apple’s advanced quad-pixel sensor technology. On the 14 Pro, four pixels were merged into one superpixel and you got a 12 megapixel photo.

On the 15 (Pro) models you can choose to take 24 MP photos. Then not four, but two pixels are merged. Do you still want to use the full 48 megapixels? Then you must use Apple ProRAW, follow the steps below.

Using Apple ProRAW with 48 megapixels

Shooting with the main camera at full 48 MP resolution is not something you always want to do. A single image has a file size of between 65 and 100 MB. But if you want to capture the greatest amount of detail possible, it’s important to use the full power of the wide-angle camera. Here’s how you can enable it:

Enable ProRAW

  • Open Settings
  • Navigate to ‘Camera’
  • Tap ‘File structures’
  • Enable the ‘Apple ProRAW and resolution adjuster’ option

Then, under ‘Pro standard’, choose ‘ProRAW 12 MP’ or ‘ProRaw Max (up to 48MP)’. Once you enable the option, you can activate ProRAW in the camera app. Open it and tap the crossed-out RAW button at the top of the screen. From that moment on, you take photos in RAW format.

Using Apple ProRAW with 48 megapixels

48 MP photos have a resolution of 8064 x 6048 pixels, which is 4x more than a 12 megapixel image. This is also reflected in the storage, a ProRAW photo with 48 MP can have a file size of 75 MB.

If you choose ProRaw 12 MP, the photos will remain 12 megapixels. This is because the quad-pixel sensor merges four pixels into one superpixel. Do you still want to use the full 48 megapixels? Then you should use Apple ProRAW Max.

You can consult more details about the photo in the photos app. Open it and then tap the i button or swipe the image up. You can then view all metadata.
