With iOS 17, your iPhone gets a nude image scanner!

Although you can already try iOS 17, we don’t expect the official release until the second half of September. So please be patient, but we will inform you about the new nude scanner!

Your iPhone gets a nude image scanner

The nude image scanner becomes part of the feature Communication security, which so far can only be found in the Messages app. If Communication Protection is enabled, nude photos are automatically blurred. This function will soon be enabled by default for young people up to the age of 16, but adults can also use it.

So the function of the nude image scanner is to detect nude photos in different apps. This does not happen online, but on the iPhone itself. That’s why every iPhone gets such a nude image scanner.

Blurry photos in Messages

The extension of the Communication Security feature appears with the arrival of iOS 17, iPadOS 17 and macOS 14. Until now, parents had to activate the feature manually and it only worked in the Messages app. Soon, however, the feature will become active by default for children within a Family Sharing family, and it will also work in other apps.

As an added precaution, the child is given the option to message about the photo to an adult they trust. If the child is under 13, the Messages app will already prompt them to start a conversation with a parent or guardian. This should also happen in other apps in the future.

Nude image scanner also for videos

Communications security also gets video monitoring for the first time. In addition, the protection goes much further than the Messages app. Content sent and received through third-party apps is also filtered by the nude image scanner. The filtering is done locally using associated AI models and Apple doesn’t see any of the content.

According to Apple, there was a demand for Communication Security for adults. This makes it possible to ‘protect’ yourself from nude photos by simply flipping a switch. The company is therefore certain that no nude photos and videos come in via AirDrop or a FaceTime video message.

This is how you set the function for yourself

Do you also want to use the nude image scanner for yourself? That is possible, when iOS 17 will soon be released for everyone – expected in September. It then works in the following way:

  1. Go to ‘Settings>Screen Time’. Screen time not activated yet? Then you have to do that first.
  2. Tap ‘Communication safety’.
  3. Set the switch behind ‘Check for sensitive photos’ to green.

As mentioned, the function is active by default for children in an Apple family. If you want to turn it off, go to the ‘Family Sharing’ settings and go to the ‘Communication safety’ option under your child’s account.
