With the movie mode, you can make beautiful videos with a depth effect on your iPhone. You just need to know how to get the most out of the function. These are the best tips!
Movie mode on iPhone: these are the best tips
Of course, the iPhone has a great camera to take pictures with. The iPhone also has plenty of cool functions for videos. For example, the movie mode (English: Cinematic mode) is a kind of portrait mode for videos. This gives you beautiful depth effects in your videos.
To use the function properly, you have to keep a few things in mind. We show you the best tips so that you can get the most out of the movie mode on the iPhone.
1. Use Movie Mode: Please set this option first
You need a lot of light to make these videos. For example, the function will not work if it is almost dark. Even towards the end of a cloudy afternoon there is sometimes too little light.
Therefore, set the option below first if you want to use the Cinematic mode. Your iPhone then screws down the stabilization slightly (so you are slightly more affected by vibrations), but you can still use the film mode with less light.
- Open the ‘Settings’;
- Scroll down and tap ‘Camera > Record video’;
- Set the slider at ‘Action mode less light’ to on.
Are you going to shoot videos on a beautiful, sunny day? Then you can of course also turn this option off again.
2. Turn on and use movie mode on iPhone
You also need to consider a number of settings on your iPhone before shooting the video in movie mode. Therefore, follow the step-by-step list below.
Enable and use movie mode on iPhone
- Tap the camera app and swipe to the “Movie” option;
- To adjust the depth of field, tap the aperture button (the button with the “ƒ”);
- Adjust the depth by swiping your finger left or right at the bottom;
- Tap the record button to start the video.
While filming, your iPhone will try to keep the subject in focus. You can also choose what to focus on while shooting the video. To do this, tap the screen and select the subject yourself.
3. Adjust video afterwards
Just like with a normal video, you can also edit the videos you made in movie mode on your iPhone afterwards. The cool thing about this is that you can also change what you want to focus on in the video. You adjust this in the following way.
- Open the video and tap ‘Edit’;
- Scroll through the video. The yellow dots (focus points) below the video show when the focus point in your video is adjusted;
- Tap an object in the video to focus on it. To follow a topic, double tap it;
- Save the video with a tap on ‘Done’.

Unfortunately, not all iPhones have movie mode on board. Only fairly recent devices have the function. These are:
- iPhone 13mini
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
