Woman drops iPhone into a ravine (and gets stuck)

An Australian woman dropped her iPhone into a ravine and became stuck upside down among the rocks. That’s how it ended.

Woman drops iPhone in ravine

For Mathilda Campbell, a walk in the woods didn’t go according to plan, as she got stuck between two rocks. The 23-year-old Australian woman was taking a walk with some friends through a forested area in Laguna, a town near Cessnock, Australia. During this walk, Campbell tried to take a photo, but instead accidentally dropped her iPhone into a small ravine.

The New South Wales Hunter Valley, the area where Campbell walked, has a large landscape with many boulders. The iPhone had fallen into a ravine between these boulders, but Campbell still tried to grab the device. While trying to do this she slipped and fell three meters down. There she got stuck between two rocks. That’s not all, because she was also hanging upside down in the gorge.

Rescue workers come to the rescue

Campbell’s friends were unable to free her, so they called emergency services. That didn’t work out easily, because they had no mobile coverage in the area. Only after an hour were the first emergency services able to arrive on the scene to rescue the woman and the iPhone from the ravine. At the time, Campbell was still hanging upside down in the canyon, with her feet stuck between the rocks.

While many people would panic in this situation, that was not the case with Campbell. According to emergency services, she was very calm during the rescue operation. That action was not easy, because seven rocks weighing between 80 and 500 kilograms had to be moved to free her. In addition, emergency services built a wooden frame above the ravine to prevent the rocks from falling on Campbell (and the iPhone).

Woman saved, iPhone not

The rescue operation lasted a total of seven hours before the 23-year-old woman was freed from the gorge. According to emergency services, she was unharmed and surprisingly calm under the situation. Campbell has now thanked the emergency services via social media. In the post, she also revealed whether her iPhone survived the fall into the ravine. Unfortunately that is not the case,”too bad about the phone though” she writes about it.

It is unknown whether the iPhone is still in the ravine or has simply suffered too much damage. We probably won’t find out either, but the important thing is that Campbell was freed from the rocks unscathed. According to emergency services, she is doing well both physically and mentally. So the bizarre story has a happy ending, although Campbell will think twice the next time she takes a photo with her iPhone.
