Before Apple, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi, which you may also know from its devices in the Netherlands, has a fully electric car. It’s called Xiaomi SU7 and we can now tell you more about what it has to offer.
To be fair, the appearance of the Xiaomi SU7 may no longer be a big surprise. Already in November we were not only able to show you the car from various angles, we were also able to tell you the first information about the EV. Now there are more numbers. The 5 meter long, 1.96 meter wide and 1.46 meter low SU7 is comparable in size to the Porsche Taycan and is packed by the Chinese with hardware that is potent on paper.
Although the Xiaomi SU7 is fully electric, it still gets a V8 or V6. What’s up with that? Well now. Xiaomi calls its electric motors HyperEngine V8, HyperEngine V6S and HyperEngine V6. The most potent version of the Xiaomi SU7 has the HyperEngine V8 drivetrain. This consists – in the variant with Max addition – of a 299 hp electric motor on the front axle and a 374 hp unit on the rear axle. This set gives the SU7, which weighs more than 2,200 kilos, a system power of 673 hp. There is a 101 kWh battery pack in the bottom. This combination helps the EV reach a speed of 100 km/h in 2.78 seconds. Its top speed: 265 km/h. According to Xiaomi, the electric range should be 800 kilometers, although this has been determined according to the Chinese CLTC cycle, which differs from the WLTC method used here. This top version has Brembo braking to calm things down again.
The V6 electric motor is a 299 hp unit. The Xiaomi SU7 with this electric motor is significantly less fast, but still quite smooth. It zooms to 100 km/h in 5.28 seconds. At the bottom of that milder flavor is a smaller 74.6 kWh battery that should give the car a range of 668 kilometers (CLTC). The gap between Xiaomi’s ‘V8’ and ‘V6’ versions is filled by the V6s. That is a 374 hp electric motor.
The Xiaomi SU7 has a 16.1-inch folding infotainment screen, a smaller digital instrument cluster and a head-up display with a diagonal of no less than 56 inches. There are also physical buttons, which is striking for a car from a smartphone manufacturer. In the snout of the SU7 there is a luggage compartment in which you can store 105 liters of stuff. Thanks to an extensive set of cameras, lidars and other sensors, the SU7 should be able to keep a close eye on the environment and drive autonomously to a certain extent.
Xiaomi has big ambitions, but it is not yet known if and when the SU7 will come to Europe. More and more non-traditional car manufacturers are venturing into the development of EVs. Although there has been talk about the arrival of an electric car from Apple for 10 years, it has still not materialized. The Chinese Huawei has founded AITO together with the also Chinese Seres car brand, Sony wants to make electric cars together with Honda.
