Did you know that you can use the iPhone as a kind of power bank? For example, you can charge your AirPods with your iPhone. That’s how it works!

If you have AirPods, you probably recognize this: they are always empty if you don’t have a charger at hand. Fortunately there is good news! Because if you have an iPhone 15 or newer, you can charge the AirPods with your iPhone. This is possible thanks to the USB -C connection that Apple has been using on its latest devices for a few years now.

Previously, iPhones had a Lightning port, but Apple has switched to USB-C since the iPhone 15. And that is secretly nice, because you only need one cable for different devices. But it has another advantage, because with a USB -C cable you can charge other devices with your iPhone.

It works very easily. If you have AirPods with a USB -C charging case (such as the AirPods Pro 2), you only have to use a USB -C -Naar -usb -c cable. Connect one side to your iPhone and the other to your AirPods. The iPhone immediately starts charging the AirPods.

Do you have an older AirPods case with a Lightning connection? Then it works too. But of course you have to use a USB -C -Naar -Lightning cable. Incidentally, charging does not work by laying your AirPods box on the back of the Magsafe of your iPhone.

Not only AirPods can be charged with your iPhone

You can not only charge AirPods in this way. You can also give other devices such as an Apple Watch or even another iPhone a little extra power. At the Apple Watch you do need the charging puk that you received with the watch.

When you connect a second iPhone, both devices first check who has the least battery charge. The iPhone is then charged with the least battery charge.

Charging AirPods with your iPhone is not going very fast

Make sure that your iPhone cannot charge very quickly in this way (maximum with 4.5 watts). It is primarily intended as an emergency solution, so that you can continue to listen to music until you have arranged a charger.
