You can now also get a speeding fine at a railway crossing

The chance of getting a fine at home because of a speed camera has increased a bit, unless you simply follow the rules. There are also speed cameras at railway crossings that can provide you with mail from the CJIB.

Enforcement using speed cameras in the Netherlands has not yet reached its peak. From now on, speed cameras will also be used at railway crossings. They do not check for speed, but for crossing while the lights have not yet been turned off. ProRail reports that, in collaboration with the Public Prosecution Service and with money from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management, speed cameras are being installed at about forty railway crossings throughout the country. This follows a test in Bunnik and earlier in Hilversum. In Hilversum, the number of violations appeared to be halved in six months thanks to the speed camera.

The first pole that really comes into focus is the one in Bunnik. There you can still incur a fine this month if you cross the railway too early or too late. The fine is not easy: a maximum of €280 for motorists. Special cameras are required, because a regular red light speed camera is not sufficient. BOAs then check the flash photo before a fine actually follows. ProRail hopes that this will ultimately reduce the number of accidents at level crossings. “The cameras ensure that people change their behavior. This makes the railway and road safer,” says regional director Harro Homan. On average there are about 31 collisions per year, in 2022 there were two deaths in accidents at level crossings.
