Michael van Gerwen is the only Dutchman left
This year, for the first time in history, 16 Dutch people participated in the World Darts Championship. Yet it turned out not to be the World Cup for the Dutch. Michael van Gerwen is the only Dutchman who can still be seen at the Darts World Championship. Kevin Doets surprisingly managed to reach the fourth round, but Chris Dobey was too strong for him there.
This does not yet make it the World Cup for the Dutch. Raymond van Barneveld, Dirk van Duijvenbode and Danny Noppert were all favorites in the second round. Yet they were unable to win their match.
Wessel Nijman was seen as a potential surprise for a good World Cup, but he also lost without a chance against Joe Cullen in the second round. Jermaine Wattimena left a good impression during the first two rounds, but unfortunately Peter Wright was too strong in the third round.

A World Cup full of surprises
Even though it is not yet the World Cup for the Dutch, the tournament is full of excitement and something unexpected happens every day. For example, Michael Smith (number two in the world) was eliminated by Kevin Doets. Mike de Decker and Gary Anderson were seen as potential contenders for the World Cup title, but they also lost their match.
Defending champion Luke Humphries lost his fourth round match to Peter Wright during the December 29 evening session. This makes Michael van Gerwen the highest ranked remaining darts player at the Darts World Championship. Yet child prodigy Luke Littler is seen as the title favorite. Littler already managed to impress this World Cup with a new record. The seventeen-year-old Englishman achieved a set average of 140.91.
So far it has been a World Cup full of surprises. The quarter-finals can be followed on Viaplay from Wednesday 1 January. With all the surprises of the past few weeks, it promises to be an exciting denouement. The final starts at 9 p.m. on Friday, January 3 and can be seen on Viaplay.
