You didn’t know these 7 hidden Spotify functions yet

Spotify is by far the most popular music service in the world, but some of its functions are unknown to many users. We list some lesser-known Spotify functions.

You were not familiar with these hidden Spotify functions

Spotify has been tinkering with the design of the app for years, but also sometimes adds functions that are well hidden. After reading this article you will be fully informed again, and hopefully you will get even more out of the music service.

1. Create folders for your Spotify playlists

Undoubtedly, avid Spotify users have dozens of playlists. This can make a mess of the playlists tab, so it is wise to divide these lists into folders every now and then. To do this, you do need the Spotify desktop app. Then follow the steps below:

  1. Open Spotify on your Mac or PC;
  2. Choose File;
  3. Click New Playlist Folder;
  4. Give the list a name.

You can then drag all your playlists into the folder afterwards, so that your Spotify app looks tidy again. For example, we have placed our self-made lists in folders and only highlighted the Discover Weekly and Release Radar from Spotify itself.

2. Scan Spotify Codes to Share Lists Quickly

Recently you can share songs, playlists and artist pages more easily. Below the album cover image you will find a qr code with the Spotify logo next to it. You can request this by opening the page and pressing the three dots at the top right. The person you want to share the list with can then scan the code with his or her Spotify app. You can read more about this handy sharing function in the tip below.

3. Press and hold numbers for a preview

Whether you’re creating a playlist or looking for a song whose name you don’t remember, this simple trick makes it a lot easier. You can play a short preview of each song by briefly pressing the name. Then you will hear a song for a few seconds without opening a new window. This makes it easy to scroll through dozens of songs at a rapid pace.

4. Scrub on your lockscreen

Since Apple has given developers access to the iPhone’s lock screen, Spotify has also taken advantage of it in a subtle way. Now you can fast forward and rewind a song without unlocking your iPhone and opening Spotify. All you have to do is wake up your iPhone and drag it over the bar that shows you how far the track is. Also handy for parties, so you can fast forward a song without unlocking the iPhone.

5. Create joint playlists (for a party)

Of course you make the best music lists yourself, but sometimes you cannot escape sharing a list with others. In such a case, a joint playlist is a godsend. You make this as follows.

  1. Open a playlist or create a new one;
  2. Tap the three dots in the top right corner;
  3. Choose ‘Collaborate’;
  4. Share the list with the people who are allowed to put music in it.

6. Keep your Discover-weekly lists for longer than a week

Every Monday equals Discover day for Spotify users. Every Monday the music service serves the Discover Weekly; a playlist that lets you listen to new music, tailored to your taste. These lists are often full of new interesting music, so it is a shame if it is overwritten with a new list every Monday.

Fortunately, you can prevent this with a little help from the IFTTTT app. Through there this link Spotify automatically creates a new list every week where your old Discover songs are placed.

7. Link Shazam to Spotify

You only listen to Shazam to discover new music, so it is not a bad idea to place all these Shazams directly in your music app. That is why you can link your Shazam app to your Spotify account, so that all songs you discover through the Shazam app are immediately saved in the list. This way, over time you will get a nice collection of songs that you would otherwise never have known.
