You will soon be able to do this with your iPad thanks to the new iPadOS 15

At WWDC 2021 developer conference, Apple unveiled the latest version of iPadOS. Thanks to iPadOS 15 you will soon have new features on your iPad, such as a new widget overview and multitasking. The new operating system is for all Apple tablets: the iPad, iPad Air and iPad Pro.

Apple’s developer conference Worldwide Developers Conference kicks off every year with a keynote, where the tech giant unveils new products and updates. For example, Apple showed iOS 15, the operating system of the iPhone. WatchOS 8, for Apple’s smartwatches was shown, TVos 15 for AppleTV, and MacOS 12, which runs on Mac PCs and Macbook laptops.

Apple is increasingly trying to put down the iPad as a laptop replacement, Apple has been working on that for a while. For example with keyboards, mice, the possibility to connect an extra screen and the computing power of the latest M1 processor. The biggest innovation for the iPad is with iPadOS 15 in the Multitasking functionality. Via a menu at the top, you can quickly put two apps next to each other in the ‘Split View’. You also have a slide view, where you can easily swipe to your other apps, and a shelf, where you have your app fullscreen. But at the bottom of the screen are a few thumbnails of the other apps you use. By tapping another app in this shelf you can quickly switch between the applications.

Apple has also worked on the widgets, thanks to a larger pallet where more apps and more widgets can be placed on a home screen. The new App Library shows your app icons grouped together.

The universal control function allows you to continue working in your program on the Mac, or vice versa.

Apple also took the time to show innovation in apps. For example with the new note option. Swiping up from the bottom corner opens a window in which you can quickly create a new note. After creating the note, simply slide it back to the bottom corner to access it later in the Notes app.

The Languages app that Apple showed made it possible to directly translate spoken text, or to make translations of (hand)written texts. The Swift Playgrounds apps have been renewed by Apple to playfully learn how to make your own apps. You can publish these tablet apps directly in the App Store if you wish.

Other apps

In addition to new operating systems and iPad apps, Apple is renewing several apps that work on the iPhone and Mac in addition to the iPad. For example, SharePlay, where you can also listen to music or watch videos together via FaceTime in (group) conversations. The way to share articles and photos, among other things, has also been improved, so that you have a clearer overview of what is being shared (with you) and by whom.

The Photos app has also been overhauled, allowing your photos to be automatically grouped into albums. To determine the atmosphere of these albums, it is possible to choose background music.
