4 tips for sticking virtual Post-its to your Mac

Chances are you are unfamiliar with ‘Sticky Notes’ while it is a default app on the Mac. In this article we explain what you can do with it.

Sticky notes on the Mac

For anyone who ever sticks Post-its to their monitor to remember something, there is a digital alternative to the Mac: Sticky Notes. It allows you to take notes just like in Pages or other writing apps. The difference is that you can always keep Sticky Notes on screen so that you are constantly reminded of them.

You don’t have to. If it concerns a less urgent message, you can also simply place it behind other windows. This way you won’t see it until you close other apps – for example at the end of the day – or if you look at the Dock.

The Mac’s virtual yellows are useful when you want to quickly access important information. An additional advantage is that you do not clutter your desk with physical notes and that you do not waste paper. In this article, you can read how the sticky notes work.

4 tips for sticking virtual Post-its to your Mac

1. Paste a note onto the picture

Sticky notes can be opened from the Dock or the Finder. You can also just search within MacOS (cmd + space) for ‘Sticky Notes’. If you have never used the app before, you will immediately see two notes with a brief explanation of the possibilities. You create a new note via ‘File> New note’ or with the key combination ‘cmd + N’.

If you want a note to always remain on the screen and not disappear behind windows, do the following:

  1. Open Sticky Notes;
  2. Create a new note or click on an existing one;
  3. Click on ‘Note’ at the top of the menu bar;
  4. Choose ‘Floating window’.

The note will now always remain, regardless of which other app you open. The ‘Note’ menu also allows you to make the message transparent if you prefer.

2. Choose a different color

If you want to better distinguish between your notes, for example if one is work-related and the other for groceries, you can give them different colors. You do that like this:

  1. Open a note;
  2. Click on ‘Color’ in the menu bar;
  3. Choose a color of your choice, there are six different ones in total.

3. Minimize and arrange

A constant reminder is useful, but you may not want the note to be constantly expanded. You can then collapse it, so that only a colored strip remains, which is a lot less in the way, but remains clear.

You can minimize notes in two ways, by double-clicking the bar at the top, or via ‘Window> Minimize’. Via Window you can also arrange your post-its, for example by color or content.

4. Save sticky notes

Notes can be saved as plain text (.txt). This way you can save or share them with others. If you have a note open, do the following:

  1. Click on Archive;
  2. Choose ‘Export text’;
  3. Give the file a name and choose a storage location;
  4. Click on ‘Save’.
