Answer
The total number of cells in the human body was calculated by a systematic study published in 2013 by a research group from the University of Bologna (doi: 10.3109/03014460.2013.807878). Data was used from the available scientific literature on the various organs and tissues. This yielded the best approximation we have, which is 372 trillion cells (1 trillion = 1000 billion), or 37.2 x 1013 cells.
