Chinese gull follows seal and dolphin
BYD – which is also active in the Netherlands – has an interesting new and extremely compact electric hatchback in China, called Seagull in China, which, as an Atto 1, would be a very interesting addition to the European delivery range.
BYD currently sells the Atto 3 in the Netherlands called Yuan Plus in China, an electric sedan called Han and a seven-seater electric SUV that listens to the equally Chinese-sounding Tang. In China, BYD naturally sells many more models, spread over various ‘lines’. For example, the Han and Tang belong to the Dynasty family, just like the Yuan Plus (Atto 3). In addition, BYD in China also carries the Ocean Series, a series of models named after animals or even warships. Think of cars with names like Frigate and Destroyer, but also the Seal and Dolphin, which have already been discussed in detail. AutoWeek has previously surfaced a patent image of the Seal and Dolphin registered in Europe, which may indicate that as successively Atto 2 and Atto 4, they could be interesting additions to the European delivery range. The BYD Seal is an electric hatchback that now has a smaller brother in China: the BYD Seagull. The Seagull.
The BYD Seal is about 4.1 meters long, but the new Seagull, with its car length of 3.78 meters, is still significantly below that. The BYD Seagull is therefore a few centimeters longer than the Dacia Spring, ideal for Europe. The 1.72 meter wide and 1.54 meter high compact five-door has a wheelbase of exactly 2.5 meters and thus exceeds the Spring by just under 8 centimeters. That sounds promising for the interior space of the hatchback named after the feathered waders. The all-round view seems less optimal, the steeply rising shoulder line and the thick C-pillar seem to deprive something of the view to the rear and to the sides.
Extensive technical information is not yet available. We do know from information and photos that we have surfaced from the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology that the Seagull has a 75 hp electric motor and a top speed of 130 km / h. The vehicle weight is at least 1,160 kilograms.
What do you think of the BYD Seagull? Should BYD bring the Seagull to Europe? Why or why not?
