European traffic ministers: an EV charging station within 60 km

If it is up to Europe, we must switch to electric mobility as soon as possible, so the European Ministers of Transport have made a new proposal: EV charging stations must be located within a radius of 60 kilometers along the entire European road network.

In the Netherlands, the fast charging stations are sprouting like mushrooms, but we are also a super densely populated country where you can also find a gas station on every corner of the street. While there are plenty of areas within Europe where we have sometimes been almost with an empty tank because there was no gas station for 150 kilometers.

In that respect, EV charging stations are quite the same, with the difference that those charging stations are a rarity in many more areas. It is not for nothing that BMW said during the presentation of their prototype EV motorcycle that although the engine is at an advanced stage in terms of technology, it will only be marketed if every mountain pass is equipped with an EV charging station.

In a meeting in France, European Transport Ministers have now proposed mandatory targets for all member states. The new legislation would require a maximum distance of 60 kilometers between all EV charging stations along the entire European road network.

No proposal is made in the bill on how this should be achieved in practice, which is held accountable by the 27 individual EU countries.

It has been established that each charging module must have a minimum capacity of 150 kW for fast charging. When the bill is passed, member states must have implemented the changes on all trans-European routes by 2025 and across the network by 2030.

In addition to numbers and availability, new restrictions were also discussed in order to standardize the terminals, with universal charging adapters and a uniform payment system to simplify the process for the consumer.
