Missed opportunity?
MG is steadily expanding its European delivery range. Recently with the 5 Electric, soon with the 4 Electric and eventually even with the fully electric Cyberster. Today we meet a smooth-lined newcomer who – unfortunately – probably shouldn’t be expected in Europe. This is the MG 7.
MG has presented the 7 in China. In its home country, the 7 fits in nicely with the delivery range that, in addition to the 3, 5, One and Pilot, also includes the MG 6 (Pro). The MG 6 and MG 6 Pro are already pretty smooth for the day, but with this brand new 7 MG goes one step further.
No, the new MG 7 has nothing to do with the eponymous model that MG delivered in China between 2007 and 2013. That was a continuation of the Rover 75 that disappeared from the market in Europe in 2005 and its British MG counterpart: the ZT. The new MG 7 is a sleek sedan with a striking sloping roofline. The manufacturer does not report detailed data yet, but from the database of the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology we have been able to extract that the MG 7 is 4.89 meters long and 1.45 meters low. The 7 has a wheelbase of 2.78 meters. It’s about 6 inches taller than the MG 6, meaning the new 7 isn’t just a fastback based on that sedan.
MG gives the 7 a fairly aggressive front with in common the world in peering headlights and a grille that gives the car an almost psychopathic grin. Nice design details: the MG 7 has frameless doors and a rear spoiler that comes up automatically from the rear, which, like the one on the back, for example, a Porsche Panamera, consists of three parts. At the bottom of the buttocks we observe four exhaust tailpipes of a sturdy size. MG already reports that the 7 will get a 2.0 four-cylinder turbo engine that delivers 261 hp and more than 405 Nm. That variant pops in 6.1 counts to 100 km / h. There will also be a 185 hp and 300 Nm strong 1.5 in the MG. The most powerful version gets a ZF automatic transmission with nine gears and is even equipped with, among other things, an active suspension and an electronically controlled differential lock.
Due to the absence of electrified powertrains, we do not expect this MG 7 on the market in the Netherlands. Is that a loss? Would you consider the MG 7 next to, for example, an Audi A5 Sportback? We are curious about your vision.
