15 million license plates in the Netherlands

Have you ever wondered how many license plates there are in the Netherlands? We do and fortunately we now have an answer to that pressing question. There are currently 15 million license plates registered in the Netherlands, according to the RDW.

According to Statistics Netherlands, there are currently 17,850,301 people living in the Netherlands. This means that 0.84 license plates are registered for every inhabitant of our country. These are of course not all passenger cars. Of the 15 million license plates, almost 9.5 million are passenger cars, more than 63 percent. This means that passenger cars account for the majority of all number plates registered in the Netherlands. In second place are mopeds and light mopeds with more than 1.3 million registrations. This is followed by the nearly 1.3 million commercial vehicles (vans, trucks, etc.). Furthermore, almost 1.3 million trailers and semi-trailers are registered. From 1 January last year, (agricultural) construction vehicles must also have a number plate registration. There are currently 720,000 number plates registered for such vehicles. Motorcycles are still above it with 800,000 registered license plates.

Electric

Of the 15 million number plates registered in the Netherlands, 4 percent belong to an electric vehicle. These are not only passenger cars, but electric passenger cars do account for a large share in the total. There are now more than 390,000 fully electric passenger cars in our country. The number of electric buses in the Netherlands is also interesting. Of the 9,500 registered buses, 1,500 (16 percent) are fully electric. 73,000 of the 762,000 light mopeds are fully electric and there are 33,000 speed pedelecs on the road in our country. Of the 800,000 motorcycles in the Netherlands, only a small number (1,600 units) are fully electric.
