2020 EV winner: nearly 20 percent of sales

The electric car can rightly be called the big winner of 2020 sales. Where total car sales fell, the number of EVs sold actually increased.

The preliminary annual figures from Bovag show that fully electric cars made a significant share of new sales this year. In conversation with BNR Nieuwsradio, Bovag spokesman Tom Huyskens calculates that the counter will probably exceed 70,000 this year. That while this year with roughly 360,000 new cars sold, almost 100,000 fewer copies were sold than last year. A quick calculation shows that the share of fully electric cars thus amounts to almost 20 percent.

Not only the share grew, but also the total number of fully electric cars sold. Last year, that amounted to about 64,000. Of all fully electric cars, the Kia e-Niro has been the big winner in sales statistics to date. Since the introduction of the Volkswagen ID3, the Korean has to fear for the lead in the annual total, because the Volkswagen is catching up considerably. However, there is a good chance that many of these ID3s will not be delivered until the new year and that part of the stock will be put on 2020 license plate. Incidentally, the Kona Electric of Kia’s sister brand Hyundai is also still in the race for first place.

Two elements have mainly promoted this advance: the purchase subsidy for EVs up to € 45,000, but also the fact that the addition will increase again next year, from 8 to 12 percent. Especially this month there is still a huge run on electric cars, just to be able to participate in the 8 percent rate. Huyskens states that 5,000 cars were registered on Wednesday alone and that the lion’s share of them are fully electrically powered. Of course, it also makes a difference that there is more and more choice of fully electric models and that range and charging speed are less and less major obstacles.
