The latest iPhone Pro models and some iPad versions have a LiDAR scanner. The sensor uses small invisible lasers to determine distance and depth. More and more apps that work with LiDAR are appearing. What can you do with it?
1. Create 3D scans
Photos allow you to capture your favorite travel destinations, but it’s much more fun if you can create an interactive 3D model of these environments. As a result, you can walk through that picturesque village again or take a seat in the cozy restaurant where you often went during your holiday.
With apps like polycam†RoomScan LiDARand Canvas: Pocket 3D Measurements you can make 3D scans using the LiDAR scanner. The apps also lend themselves well to creating 3D models of collectibles. This way you can edit your collection in no time sneakers or cuddly toys digitize. Polycam in particular has an extensive community where users post their creations. Think of it like Instagram for 3D models.
Most apps are free to use, but have a paid option that removes certain restrictions or allows you to create higher quality scans.
2. Better pictures in the dark
In recent years, Apple has expanded the cameras of the iPhone and iPad significantly improved, allowing you to take better pictures in low light. Yet an iPhone with a LiDAR scanner succeeds a lot better in this, especially in combination with the special night mode. The LiDAR has six times faster autofocus in low light, and you can see that immediately in the photos.
With the help of the scanner, the camera can estimate depths much better, which is also better reflected in portrait photos. You don’t have to turn on any special function on your iPhone or iPad. The LiDAR scanner is put to work immediately when you take pictures.
3. Accurately measure
We already wrote that LiDAR is able to better estimate depths and distances. This also comes in handy when you want to measure things. Apple has developed the Measure app especially for this. The app is standard on your phone, but if you accidentally deleted it, you can download the tool again for free from the App Store.
Measuring uses augmented reality to measure distances. Point your camera at an object, tap the plus icon to measure a distance and move your phone or tablet in a certain direction. Thanks to LiDAR you can now measure distances accurately.
4. AR Apps
In addition to the Measure app, there are of course many more tools that use the LiDAR scanner. What about IKEA Placewith which you can put furniture in your digital living room, or LEGO Hidden Side, bringing your favorite LEGO set to life. The possibilities are endless!
