Porsche Cayenne facelift

Porsche is giving its third-generation Cayenne a major facelift. The fact that there is not yet a completely new one has everything to do with the electrification plans of the Germans.

Without Elon Musk, the automotive world would have looked very different. Chances are that without that curious man you wouldn’t see pictures here of a thoroughly revised third generation Cayenne, but of a completely new fourth generation. Undoubtedly with thick petrol engines, whether or not in PHEV form. But times have changed and Porsche is also going fast on the electric tour. Thus, the next Cayenne will be an EV, just like the new Macan. But the car will not be available until 2025 or -26 and until then the current generation Cayenne will have to go along for a while. In fact, this updated third generation will be available for a while alongside the fourth fully electric variant. How long it stays that way varies by market, but everyone understands that Porsche dealers in the Netherlands and Norway are taking the petrol model off the sales lists earlier than those in Florida or Texas.

But to ensure that the current Cayenne can last for many years to come, it has been changed hands considerably. It starts on the outside, but the new Porsche style that we know from the Taycan and the latest 911, among others, is visible. A new bumper, ditto bonnet and light units give the car a modern look, on the back we see the now well-known 3D taillights that come out of the body. Matrix LED is now standard on the car, with 32,000 pixels that can actively direct the light around other traffic.

Interior

We got to see the inside a few weeks ago. It is clear that the Cayenne follows the style of the Taycan. We see a similar curved screen with a diagonal of 12.6 inches where five different clocks display all the information you could wish for. However, the screen does not float like in the Taycan, but is sunk in the dashboard. To the right of that is the operation of the automatic transmission, which we also know from the Taycan. The lever thus disappears from the center tunnel, where more space remains for, among other things, the cup holders. We know the new sports steering wheel from the current 911, the well-known button for the driving modes is now standard. The latest Porsche Communication Management (PCM) with 12.3-inch touchscreen can be found on the center console, but the (optional) display for the passenger is more interesting. It measures 10.9 inches and can show all kinds of information about the car, but also show streaming services and videos if desired. Ideal for long journeys. Of course, the driver should not be distracted, so there is a film over it that makes it impossible to view the screen when you are behind the wheel. When stationary, all streaming services can also be displayed on the center console.

Engines and technology

There is also a lot going on under the hood. There will be three variants at launch: the basic Cayenne, an S in an E-Hybrid PHEV. Two more plug-ins will follow later: the SE-Hybrid and a Turbo SE. We can also count on a new GTS with V8. What is strikingly not coming is a Turbo without a plug. Partly for this reason, the 2.9-liter V6 from the current Cayenne S (the engine from the Audi RS4) is making way for the V8 that is now in the Cayenne Turbo. It delivers 474 hp and 600 Nm, making it 34 hp and 50 Nm stronger than the six-cylinder it replaces. The Cayenne S and Cayenne Coupé S stomp it to a speed of 100 km / h in 4.7 seconds and record a top speed of 273 km / h behind their name.

Porsche Cayenne Coupe

The basic Cayenne – so the Porsche Cayenne ‘without S’ – keeps its V6, although it is now 13 hp and 50 Nm stronger than before with 353 hp and 500 Nm. The E-Hybrid gets a system power of 470 hp, partly because the electric motor with 177 hp is about 40 hp more powerful than before. More than enough to run on electricity alone. The battery also receives a major upgrade and goes from 17.9 kWh to 25.9 kWh. Good for up to 90 electric WLTP kilometers. Moreover, charging is possible with three phases. Not unique for a plug-in, it is also possible with Mercedes, but it is also special. For the future stronger plug-ins don’t expect too many changes to the battery, but the (thicker) petrol engines will deliver more power.

The suspension is also being overhauled. Porsche puts the Cayenne on steel springs as standard and combines this with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM). New shock absorbers? Of the lot, the same goes for upgraded and optional adaptive air suspension. Porsche also indicates that the differences between the Normal, Sport and Sport Plus driving modes have become greater.

There will not be a new extreme Turbo GT, that was a one-off gift from Porsche. That car has done extremely well in the Netherlands despite its high price, more than a hundred have been ordered. Of course, all changes also apply to the popular Coupé version of the Cayenne, both body styles remain. Little has changed in terms of dimensions: the Cayenne is still a large and very spacious car. We do see a clear upgrade of the materials.

Prices Porsche Cayenne

The updated Porsche Cayenne can be ordered immediately and will be available at Dutch dealers from July. The Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid costs a minimum of €110,000 and changes hands as a Coupé from €113,200. The non-hybrid Cayenne with V6 stands for €146,200 in the order books (Coupé: €151,000). The Cayenne S costs €182,600, the Cayenne S Coupé €189,100.
