Xpeng has presented a completely new electric SUV in Shanghai. This is the Xpeng G6, a car that introduces a new platform, but which has few optical surprises for the regular AutoWeek.nl visitor.
Why the Xpeng G6 is probably not an earth-shattering appearance for many of you? AutoWeek was able to tell you the first photos and the first information about the new electric SUV more than a month ago. During Auto Shanghai, Xpeng has now pulled the curtain off the G6 itself. Xpeng touts its electric newcomer as Ultra Smart Coupé SUV. But why this linguistic boasting?

Well now. The Xpeng G6 is not just a new model for the manufacturer. The G6 is the first car from Xpeng to run on the brand’s new Smart Electric Platform Architecture 2.0 (SEPA2.0). This new modular basis makes it possible for Xpeng, among other things, to reduce the development time it needs for a new model by 20 percent. The base is suitable for cars with a wheelbase of 1.8 to 3.2 meters, so it can accommodate cars of many sizes. The wheelbase of 1.8 meters that Xpeng mentions is interesting, as it may indicate the arrival of an extremely small EV from the brand. According to Xpeng, it will come with an electric sedan, an electric coupe, an electric hatchback, an electric station wagon and, in addition to electric SUVs, also electric MPVs and pick-ups. More figures from the SEPA2.0 platform? Certainly. The platform has 800V on-board voltage, which means that cars can charge with up to 480 kW via Xpeng’s charging network. With ‘third party’ chargers, the Xpengs should be able to fast charge with up to 180 kW.

Design
The Xpeng G6 also benefits from the 800v architecture that makes its new base possible. The powertrain, not yet further explained by Xpeng, should give the car a range of 755 kilometers. Mind you, that was probably determined through the Chinese CLTC method, so it’s very optimistic. The Xpeng G6’s has a Cd value of 0.248 and is the first Xpeng to get the new family face. Striking is the small rear window and the electronically controlled and folding rear spoiler.

Rear and four-wheel drive
The wheelbase of the Xpeng G6 is 2.89 meters. AutoWeek could tell you earlier that the Xpeng G6 is 4.75 meters long and is therefore 14 centimeters shorter than big brother G9. The same information previously surfaced by AutoWeek already showed that the Xpeng G6 will in any case be available with a 296 hp electric motor on the rear axle. In addition, there will be a four-wheel drive version that also has a 190 hp electric motor on the front axle. Despite its new platform, the G6 is not a lightweight. After all, the model weighs at least 1,995 kilos.
Xpeng screws into the interior, among other things, a 15-inch digital display and a smaller digital instrument panel. Xpeng gives the G6 front seats that you can fold fully back, an extensive air cleaning system and a glass roof with an area of two square meters. The whole looks quite minimalistic and tidy. Interesting is the name of the car. Xpeng says that model name G6 only applies to the Chinese market. It is not yet known what the SUV will be called in Europe. Xpeng hints that the G6 will also come to Europe.
Xpeng currently sells the G9 and P7 in the Netherlands.
