Out of the feathers and in the feathers on the track
The Nürburgring-Nordschleife is and will remain one of the best places for car manufacturers to test the sporty qualities of their new models. Audi is working on a new generation Q5 and it is therefore not very surprising that the new Audi SQ5 has run into the lamp on the more than twenty kilometers German circuit.
The current generation of Audi Q5 has been running since 2016, so the management in Ingolstadt commissioned the development of a new Audi Q5 years ago. We have already served you the new Audi Q5 in a wrapped test suit and this time we can present you the sportier Audi SQ5. That sporty top version drove past the lens of our spy photographer during test work on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife.
The new Audi Q5 and SQ5 will be based on a further development of the platform of the current generation Q5. That is not the MQB basis as you find under many models of the Volkswagen Group, but the MLBevo platform that is also under cars like the A4. The new Audi Q5 will not get a fully electric version. After all, Audi has devised the Q6 e-tron for that, which will appear later. Just like the current Q5, there will most likely also be a Q5 Sportback variant with a more sloping roofline.
What can you expect from the engines of the new Audi Q5? Count on mild-hybrid petrol engines and one or more plug-in hybrid versions. The Audi SQ5, which was available until recently, had a 341 hp 3.0 TDI – a V6 – under the hood in the Netherlands. In 2017, the SQ5 started its existence here with a 3.0 TFSI petrol engine, complete with a 353 hp powerful V6. Whether the new SQ5 will get a diesel engine again? We don’t expect it, but never say never.
