Toyota Carina E GTSI (1994) – Enthusiast Wanted

Just over a year ago we already presented a Toyota Carina E in ‘Fancier Wanted’, but this Carina E GTSI is already allowed to follow. It is in fact a rare and smooth version and, moreover, this copy still looks very fine.

The Toyota Carina E is a car that many will undoubtedly not associate with sporty driving in any way. Yet over time there were some versions that were nice and potent. The GTI was the crème de la crème. It was first 158 hp, and later 175 hp. With that you could get out of the feet pretty smoothly: 0 to 100 km / h went in 8.4 seconds and the top speed was 225 km / h. In the 90s that was really nice for a middle class car. The GTI was also quite subtly sportier, which could make the surprise even bigger for fellow road users when you hit the gas. Did that whole story appeal to you, but did you find the GTI too expensive? Then you could still go for the slightly milder and cheaper GTSI. We have them here for us.

This GTSI has a slightly more subtle appearance than the GTI. However, just like in the GTI, there is a 2.0 four-cylinder in the nose, a slightly different one that kicks it up to ‘only’ 133 hp. In the 0-100 sprint, you don’t even notice that less power very clearly, because the GTSI is (provided all horses are still there) with 9 seconds still pretty spry. The top speed of 205 km / h is also nothing to be ashamed of and certainly was not at the time. Sporty seats keep you nice and firmly in place, you have electric windows at the front and rear and the side mirrors are also electrically adjustable. You just have to be able to live without air conditioning and with a cassette player, although the latter still needs some work.

However, this is pre-eminently a copy to just leave it as it is now. Because to start with, find a Carina E GTSI, let alone one that looks as good as this one. Of course pictures can be deceiving, but this really does look like a neat car. The mileage of only 70,000 km and the fact that it has only had one previous owner also speak in its favour. A nice opportunity for those who happen to have a soft spot for the Carina E, or older Toyotas in general. You really have to be an enthusiast to look at the car for €6,995. After all, that price seems to belong more on a GTI, although this GTSI is definitely worth more than the majority of the Carina E’s.
