Bi-directional charging for electric newcomer

Electric Renault 5 can return energy

In 2024, the fully electric modern incarnation of the Renault 5 will be at dealers. The model will be a competitor of the Volkswagen ID2, which is also yet to be revealed, and will receive an interesting piece of technology. The electric R5 can charge bidirectionally.

The electric Renault 5 – which may be called the full Renault 5 E-Tech – will be launched on the market with hardware and software that makes bidirectional charging possible. This means that you can not only charge it, but that it can return electricity to the grid in times of scarcity. So says Eric Blanchard, responsible for the development of at Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Zero Emissionpowertrains, against Automedienportal. In 2019, Renault already started an experiment in Utrecht with Zoe’s that could charge bidirectionally.

To make the so-called Vehicle to Grid hardware (V2G) possible, according to Blanchard, Renault has “developed an entirely new architecture.” The electric Megane E-Tech and other upcoming models – such as the new Scénic – will also receive this V2G technology, says Blanchard.

We also already know that the electric Renault 5 will be placed on the CMF-B-EV platform. In fact, that basis is the variant of the existing CMF-B platform intended for electric cars that you will find under the Clio and Captur. However, 30 percent of the parts of that platform are completely new, Renault recently told AutoWeek. The R5 should soon be both lighter and cheaper than the Zoe.
