500,000 driving licenses extended online

For several years it has been possible to apply for a new driving license online. That turns out to be quite popular, because the RDW reports that the 500,000th driving license has now been extended online.

Renewing a driving license no longer always has to be done physically at the town hall. Since 2018, it is also possible to apply for a driving license online and this is now possible in 270 of the 342 Dutch municipalities. That turns out to be quite popular; according to the RDW, almost 30 percent of driving licenses are now applied for online and the 500,000th online applied for driving license was recently issued.

If you want to apply for a driving license online, you must go to a photographer recognized by the RDW. You then have a photo taken there and it is sent digitally to the RDW together with your signature. You must then submit the application at home using DigiD. Two days later you can pick up your driver’s license at the municipality. Incidentally, you still have to go to the town hall for a completely new driving licence, for example if you have just passed your driving test. On the website of the RDW you can see where online renewal is possible.
