Four times cream of the crop

If you don’t find a Ghost, Cullinan or even Phantom exclusive enough, you can turn to Rolls-Royce for an even more exclusive look. The Rolls-Royce Droptail that the Choachbuilddepartment of the brand presents is an example of this.

Coach Builds are the equivalent of haute couture,” said Rolls-Royce. What exactly does that mean? We wonder too, but at least it indicates that Rolls-Royce’s most recent coach build find it quite interesting. And let’s be honest: the open piece of English chest beating is of course special. Rolls-Royce is only going to build four copies of its creation called Droptail. The first of these has now been presented and is called Rolls-Royce Droptail La Rose Noire in full.

You might not say it, but this apparently huge colossus is officially a roadster. It is open and only offers space for two occupants. This makes it – and Rolls-Royce agrees – the first roadster of the manufacturer in the modern history of the brand. Of course, the Droptail is miles away from cars like the Mazda MX-5 and BMW Z4 that you might associate with that body style, but the Droptail is really one too. The Droptail, according to Rolls-Royce, was created after four years of working with its ‘most ambitious clients’. Rolls customers with notes on their vocals, that’s promising.

Rolls-Royce blew his coachbuilddepartment in 2017 with the Sweptail. Two years ago, the extra exclusive niche within the Rolls house came with the Boat Tail and this Droptail is now the newest product of that department. According to Rolls-Royce, of that set of special models, it is the romantic. In the 5.3 meter long and 2 meter wide battleship, Rolls-Royce says it has incorporated influences from the 1912 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost ‘Sluggard’, the 1930 Phantom Brewster New York Roadster and the 1925 Silver Ghost Piccadilly. We take the brand at its word.

Unlike the Sweptail and Boat Tail, the Droptail uses its own base and is therefore not based on the Ghost or Phantom. The open two-seater has a unique monocoque constructed from a combination of aluminium, steel and carbon fibre. The rear wings are the largest carbon fiber body panels Rolls’ has ever applied to a model. Under the hood is a 6.6 V12 with two turbos that delivers 600 hp and 840 Nm. The first example – the La Rose Noire – has an interior in which Rolls-Royce has applied no fewer than 1,603 pieces of wood veneer. Unnecessarily much? Naturally. Does it match the opulent character of the almost unique Rolls? Also that.
