21 cents extra?

Fuel suddenly became a lot more expensive at the beginning of July and it may not stop there. There are voices not to implement the further increase in excise duty as of 1 January, but the government does not seem to agree.
The temporary reduction in excise duty that was introduced last year in response to the enormous increase in fuel prices was largely reversed as of 1 July. The rest would then follow on 1 January and an inflation correction would be applied. The result: petrol will be roughly 21 cents per liter more expensive than now, while it already costs more than €2 per liter. The alarm is being sounded in the border region, because there it would not only be bad news for gas station owners, but also for local shopkeepers.
According to RTL News there will therefore be calls in The Hague not to implement that further increase. For the time being, however, the plans are simply on the table and it seems that the parties that oppose must come up with very good plans to get it off the table. The problem is that not implementing that increase will leave a hole of hundreds of millions of euros in the budget and that money will have to come from somewhere else. In that case, cuts will have to be made on another item or, on the contrary, there will be a different tax increase.
The final plans will be released on Prinsjesdag, September 19, but don’t be surprised if a possible ‘windfall’ at the pump comes out before then.
