Up to over 500 hp strong
The Chinese Xpeng is launching one new electric model after another into the automotive world. This time a special one. Meet the Xpeng X9, one hell of an electric MPV that could serve as Xpeng’s answer to the Volkswagen ID Buzz in Europe.
In the market for an electric space giant? Then you can contact Volkswagen for the ID Buzz and, for example, Ford for the E-Tourneo Custom. The Chinese Xpeng is also coming with an electric ballroom on wheels and more than the aforementioned EVs from Volkswagen and Ford will become MPVs. In the middle of this year, Xpeng CEO He Xiaopeng announced the arrival of an electric MPV that would be called X9. It is the Xpeng X9 that AutoWeek can now show you after research in the database of the Chinese Ministry of Transport and Information Technology.
The Xpeng X9 is quite a monster. The electric MPV is 5.29 meters long, 1.99 meters wide and 1.79 meters high. There is a distance of no less than 3.16 meters between the front and rear axle. Until recently, the G9 was the largest Xpeng, but with a length of 4.89 meters and a wheelbase of 2.99 meters, it is easily superior to the X9. Xpeng has not yet released technical specifications, but registration data with the Chinese ministry shows that the X9 weighs at least 2,560 kilos and will have a 320 hp electric motor on the front axle. There will also be a 2,630 kilo four-wheel drive with a 320 hp electric motor on the front axle and a 184 hp powerful unit on the rear axle. The top speed of both versions is 200 km/h. We cannot yet tell you anything about the capacity of the battery pack. The Xpeng G9 is available with a 98 kWh battery, among other things. The package in the X9 will certainly not be inferior to that.
Just like well-known Xpeng models such as the P7 and G9, the X9 has lighting on the front divided over two layers. It is striking that the X9 has significantly more sharp corners and sleek lines than the mainly rounded P7 and G9. Just look at the diagonal line in the doors and the way the windows and the rear are designed.
Is the Xpeng X9 coming to Europe? That is difficult to say at the moment. Xpeng itself says nothing about it. To date, Xpeng has shipped almost all its models to Europe. The Chinese delivery range consists of the G3, G6, G9, P5 and P7. The P7 and G9 are for sale in the Netherlands, the P5 should initially also have been sold here and the G3 is available at Xpeng sales points in Norway, among others. To date, only the G6 has not appeared in Europe, but that model is so young that it may not have had the chance to make it to Europe yet. In China, MPVs – and also electric ones – are much more important than in Europe. Brands such as Buick, Lexus, Hongqi offer luxurious ballrooms with sliding doors and Geely’s brand Zeekr also has a large electric MPV in its range.
Would you welcome a large electric MPV from Xpeng – or another brand – with open arms? Why or why not?
