In one fell swoop the largest export market
The Vietnamese Vinfast announced years ago that it would come to Europe, but as always, such a market introduction is not easy for newcomers. However, we are now hearing concrete news again: Europe should become the largest export market for Vinfast this year.
It has been known since 2021 that Vinfast is coming to Europe with several electric SUVs, cars that had different names then than they do now. The European ‘invasion’ has already been postponed from November 2021 to 2022 and then to early 2023, but those moments have all passed silently. Reuters now reports that Vinfast cars will actually come to Europe in the short term. 3,000 units to be precise, which would instantly make Europe Vinfast’s largest export market, according to Reuters. This is of course mainly because the brand has only just started exporting, but still. What’s brave about Vinfast is that it also wants to start in the US, which is not an obvious step for newcomers in general and certainly for a brand from Vietnam, which is loaded with Americans. According to reports, 2,100 cars have now been delivered there.
According to Reuters, the 3,000 cars are all of the VF8 type, the smaller of the two electric SUVs announced. The cars would be distributed across France, Germany and the Netherlands and hit the road in the last quarter of this year. The Vinfast VF8 is a car of the size Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Tesla Model Y, but Vinfast wants to distinguish itself with a ‘premium experience’ and the associated refinement. The Vinfast VF8 has an 87.7 kWh battery and a range of 471 kilometers. Prices start at €53,900, although a battery subscription is added.
It may well be that you have already seen such a VF8 driving, because that has also happened to the undersigned and his network. The green copy with a German license plate did its rounds here for a while. The ‘F’ of Frankfurt already indicates that it is most likely a car from Vinfast’s German headquarters, although there will also be an office in Amsterdam.
